On 1 July 2018, Austria has assumed the 6-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the third time after 1998 and 2006. The Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union has set three priority areas under the banner of a Europe that protects:
- Security and the fight against illegal migration
- Securing prosperity and competitiveness through digitalisation
- Stability in the European neighbourhood – EU perspective of the Western Balkans/South Eastern Europe
The Austrian priorities are aligned to the 18-month Programme of the Presidency trio, made up of the presidencies of Estonia, Bulgaria and Austria.
