Together with their French members, l’Association Française des Aidants and La Compagnie des Aidants, Eurocarers signed an open letter to the French President ahead of his address to the European Parliament on the 17th April.

Indeed, the Commission‘s proposal for a Directive on work-life balance for parents and people with caregiving responsibilities, tabled in April 2017, is now entering a crucial phase of negotiations.  Whereas the European Parliament and the European Council should agree on a final text under a co-decision procedure, some member states are currently seeking to undermine the proposal.

On the contrary, Eurocarers very much see the proposed directive as a major step in the right direction, since it targets carers as well as parents.  Among other things, the Directive would introduce a minimum individual entitlement of 5 days per year paid at sick pay level to contribute to a better reconciliation of work and caring responsibilities and to improve talent retention, in particular of women, on the labour market. It would also establish a right for parents of children up to 12 and carers to request flexibility in working hours, schedule or place of work for a set period of time (though with no obligation for the employer to grant the requested change).  This Directive is a key element of the implementation of the Pillar of Social Rights. This is why, together with other relevant civil society organisations, Eurocarers takes action to press for the swift and full adoption of the Directive without delay.
