The Chamber of Caregivers of Slovakia: Addressing a crisis in care

This summer, the Chamber of Caregivers of Slovakia has been actively addressing the growing crisis in the caregiving sector. In May 2024, they partnered with the Platform of Families of Children with Disabilities to strengthen the rights of caregivers at various levels. Their collaboration focuses on legislative changes to improve the lives of caregivers and those they care for.

In July, the Chamber issued a press release titled “Yesterday Was Late!” warning of the severe challenges facing the caregiving sector. Years of state underfunding, combined with an aging population, have led to a critical shortage of caregivers. The Chamber, led by President Dana Grafiková, highlighted the physical and psychological demands of the job, low wages, and poor working conditions, which have made caregiving an unattractive profession. This crisis has already forced some care facilities to close, leaving families unprepared for home care.

In August, the Chamber participated in discussions at the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family, advocating for the rights of informal caregivers and opposing cuts to care allowances. They continue to urge the government to prioritize investments in social services, particularly by increasing caregiver salaries and improving training.

The Chamber remains committed to ensuring that caregivers receive the support they need, warning that without immediate action, the dependent care system is at risk of collapse.
