The European voice for informal carers

AGE Proposal for an EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism

AGE marked the International Day of Older Persons 2025, celebrated on 1 October, by launching its Proposal for an EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism.

AGE Platform Europe is the largest European network of organisations of and for older people. The organisation aims to voice the diverse experiences and aspirations of the growing share of the older population in the European Union and raise awareness on ageing issues.

Grounded in human rights, equality and solidarity between generations, the Proposal for an EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism would provide the backbone for a future EU Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness. It aims to help build a fairer, more dynamic, inclusive and resilient Union – socially, economically and democratically.

Tackling ageism is not only a matter of justice – it is vital to Europe’s growth, competitiveness, innovation, crisis preparedness, and global leadership. AGE and its members continue to advocate strongly for this.

About the Proposal for an EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism

This paper presents a set of 9 actionable, high-impact flagship initiatives aimed at ending ageism and embedding age equality across EU policy.

While rooted in the lived realities of older persons, it takes an intersectional and life-course approach, designed to complement existing EU equality strategies and strengthen protections for all generations.
