European Carers Day in Greece

On Wednesday, 9 October 2024, a successful event took place at the European Parliament Office in Athens and online in celebration of European Carers Day. Ms. Elvira Forte, Press Officer at the European Parliament Office in Greece, welcomed attendees, emphasising the European Parliament’s role and the need to support vulnerable groups such as informal carers.

The event’s theme focused on collaboration between informal carers and healthcare professionals and featured notable speakers. Ms. Nansia Gatopoulou from the World Health Organization’s Office for Quality of Care and Patient Safety in Athens delivered a keynote, and former MEP Mr. Stelios Kympouropoulos highlighted informal carers as a crucial link in the healthcare system.

Ms. Evanthia Sakellari, Associate Professor of Community Health at the University of West Attica, and Mr. Christos Prapas, Lecturer at the same university, discussed the importance of collaboration between informal carers and healthcare professionals in promoting community health. Ms. Claire Champeix, Project and Policy Officer at the European Federation of Eurocarers, addressed the theme of European Carers’ Day 2024 and the EU’s Care Strategy.

Dr. Elizabeth Mesthenaiou, Sociologist and Researcher, examined the relationship between informal and family carers, state policy, and healthcare professionals, while Evangelia Bista, Co-founder of Kapa3 and PhD candidate, discussed the burden and quality of life of carers for oncology patients.

The event was held under the auspices of the European Parliament Office in Greece, the Hellenic Psychiatric Association and Eurocarers.
