The European voice for informal carers

Invisible no more: New Position Paper on Migrant Care Work

As part of this year’s European Carers Day campaign – “Invisible no more: Let’s see & value Migrant Care”, Eurocarers is proud to launch a new Position Paper on Migrant Care Work.

Across Europe, long-term care (LTC) services remain far from accessible, affordable or adequate. Families are often left to fill the gaps, with relatives and friends stepping in as informal carers – frequently at the expense of their own health, wellbeing and employment. To cope, many turn to migrant care, which has become an essential but often invisible part of Europe’s care systems.

This Position Paper highlights the perspective of informal carers, who employ and rely on migrant care workers and the challenges faced by migrant workers themselves. It warns that the current situation undermines not only workers’ rights, but also the wellbeing of informal carers and the quality of care received by those in need – running counter to the objectives of the European Care Strategy.

The paper outlines seven key policy recommendations, calling for:

  • significant investment in accessible, affordable and quality LTC,
  • proper recognition and legal protection of migrant care work,
  • support and guidance for families employing migrant workers, and
  • innovative community-based solutions to ensure sustainable, fair care for all.

Together, let’s make migrant care visible, valued and protected.
