The European voice for informal carers

Supporting Young Carers in Europe

Published on the occasion of the International Day of Families 2025 – “Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development”

On this International Day of Families, Eurocarers highlights the often-overlooked role of young carers – children and young people who provide care to a family member with a disability, chronic illness, or other care needs. Their contribution is vital but too often unrecognised, placing them at risk of educational, social, and emotional disadvantage.

Aligned with this year’s theme, Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development, our policy paper calls on decision-makers at EU and national levels to take concrete steps to identify, support, and empower young carers, ensuring their inclusion in family policy frameworks. Sustainable development begins with strong, supported families – and that means making young carers visible and valued.
