The European voice for informal carers

Combining caregiving and studies

Many students balance their studies with the demanding role of informal carers, providing support to loved ones affected by illness, disability, mental health issues, ageing, or addiction. While many find this role meaningful, the lack of visibility often leaves them without the recognition and support they need. This dual responsibility can strain their well-being and highlight the need for tailored, structural support. To address this, a collaborative project by Hogeschool Gent (HOGENT) and Erasmus hogeschool Brussel (EhB) explored how higher education can better support student informal carers. Through surveys and interviews with both students and educational staff, the project examined challenges, attitudes, and potential policies, alongside awareness campaigns to foster understanding. This report details findings and strategies to promote an informal care-friendly student environment.
