The European voice for informal carers

Understanding and supporting informal carers in Belgium

As the demand for healthcare and assistance continues to rise, informal caregivers—family members or friends who support individuals with physical or psychological dependencies—play an increasingly vital role. In Belgium, over 12% of individuals aged 15 and older provide regular informal care. Recognizing their growing importance, the School of Public Health at the Université Libre de Bruxelles has launched a research project, supported by Partenamut and various caregiver associations.

This four-year study will explore the socio-demographic profiles of caregivers, their recognition process, and their collaboration with professional healthcare services. Using both qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (data analysis) methods, the research aims to deepen the understanding of caregivers’ evolving roles and challenges. Ultimately, the project seeks to enhance caregiver recognition, improve support mechanisms, and develop policy recommendations tailored to their needs.
