The European voice for informal carers

Sad news – Passing of Ciara O’Dwyer

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of our dear colleague Ciara O’Dwyer, after a period of illness, on the 6th February, at the age of 40.

Ciara had joined our small team in February 2020 to cover for Francesca Centola’s maternity leave. Her interest in carers and in our mission was nevertheless not new as she had spent her entire academic and professional career exploring the topics of care and caring. Most recently, she had coordinated the Human Rights of Older Persons and Long-term Care Project, on behalf of ENNHRI, which largely contributed to reigniting the much-needed debate about the future of care in Europe. A passionate advocate of social justice, she made a tremendous contribution to our work on young carers in particular and her amazing enthusiasm and talent are still felt in our work today.

On top of her professional qualities, Ciara was a very kind and caring colleague, a real ray of sunshine. Her always positive attitude and contagious smile will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with her husband Eoin, her three kids, Áine, Naoise and Cúán as well as her entire family.
